My Therapeutic Approach
I help clients identify the source of their emotional pain, and of course, the triggers that keep their pain alive. To achieve this I support clients to find new ways to navigate their triggers, thoughts and behaviour. All of which are an important part of this process.
I believe that there is not just one therapy-mode that works for everything. Consequently, I use a range of evidence and research-based techniques. These include but are not exclusive to:
-
is a goal-oriented therapy modality that focuses on the link between our thoughts and our actions. It is useful to help people identify and change thought patterns that cause unhealthy, unproductive, or incapacitating behaviour. CBT is designed to help clients notice unhelpful thoughts, identify alternatives and look at different perspectives on situations experienced. This approach is often helpful with people suffering from anxiety, depression and stress.
-
This modality offers an alternative to experiential avoidance through a variety of therapeutic interventions. In ACT, there is no attempt to reduce, change, avoid, suppress or control private experiences, such as depression, anxiety, urges, traumatic memories, fear of rejection, anger, grief etc. Instead, learning how to reduce the impact and influence of unwanted thoughts and feelings can be achieved through the effective use of mindfulness. Opening up to those private experiences and making room for them to come and go without a struggle. ACT interventions are focused around two main processes: Developing acceptance of unwanted private experiences which may be out of personal control; and Commitment and action toward living a life of meaning and value.
-
focuses on past and present life events and relationships and how they impact your current feelings, relationships and choices. The goal is to help the client acknowledge and understand their difficult feelings and repressed emotions, and to support them toward resolving internal psychological conflicts, improve life experiences, self-esteem and relationships. Insight Therapy is one psychodynamic therapy that I use consistently with clients.
-
The main goal in this therapy to is to help the client integrate the reality of their loss into their life moving forward, and helping them maintain a healthy bond to the loved one they lost. Loss may include separation from or death of a loved one.
-
The approach I use is largely based on the extensive research from 'The Gottman Method', which aims to defuse conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect and affection; remove blockages that create a sense of stagnation, and heightening empathy and understanding within the relationship. Before the therapy process begins a thorough assessment of the couple's relationship history is conducted in order for the process to be appropriately tailored to each couple.
